How to Build a Home Library On a Budget

Having books available for children to pick up and read is something I truly believe is something that should be high on the priority lists.   Having books is very crucial in the development of children.  Books help with their ability to understand words, use their imagination and develop their speech, as well as being something they really enjoy.
I remember as a child having lots of books available to read, not only at home, but at my grandparents house as well as the library.  Books were everywhere! Some of my favorite memories was the day the teacher handed out the book order forms! I couldn't wait to go home, sit down with my mom and pick out a few fun books to add to my collection!
When I grew older and began making a family of my own, I knew that I wanted books to be a part of my child's life.  I joined a book club where I bought Dr. Seuss Books on a monthly basis as well as a Disney Collection to collect for my daughter!  My daughter actually just brought them home from her dad's house in January when she was home for our family Christmas with her. My daughter LOVED these books as a child, and I truly think that the Disney Collection helped form her love of Travel as Mickey Mouse traveled to a different country in each book. Each book gave her a glimpse of life in each. Her growing up in a Military family, helped with her love of travel too.

I believe that no matter what, books should be something that we invest in for our children.  Books, as I stated above, help with early childhood development.  As children become older, books become more and more important. Books ensure a better future.
I believe it is important to buy new books so that we are supporting the authors, illustrators, and everyone involved in the publishing of a book.  I also understand that sometimes our budget's are tight so buying new can be hard. It is OK to buy books second hand.  Many libraries will sell their books as they bring in new. This is one great way to get books on your child's bookshelf and in their hands when money is tight.
Think about how much money we spend on entertainment in a month. It may be money spent going to the movie theater, renting movies, music, video games, or any other activity.  If you want to see your children succeed in school...in life. The purchase of books should be included in your monthly budget for entertainment.
You may be asking, "If I can get books from the library, why is it important that I buy new books?".  The answer is quite simple.  If you own the books, your kids can read it now, read it next week, read it in 6 months.  The book is always available for when the child is in the mood to read that particular book. An added trip to the library is not needed. :)
My daughter is now grown, graduated college, and living on her own so I don't have a need to buy her books like I did when she was younger. I do however, have a grandson whom my husband and I are buying books for! I have found some great books at great prices shopping at Walmart, Sam's Club, and through Usborne Books & More.   I'll admit, our collection is mostly from Usborne Books & More as I am an Independent Consultant for them.
The quality of the books are top of the line and if you ever do have a problem with them, Usborne Books & More will replace them at half the original cost! That alone makes the books a great value when a child accidently rips out a page, breaks the spine, or spills their drink on their favorite book. What bookstore do you know that offers such a deal?

A great way to get books at a great deal is by purchasing them in collections or box sets rather than individually.  Not only will you receive a better deal, but when your child finishes the first book in the series, they can grab the next book and continue reading without having to wait until the budget allows it. This new popular collection has been taking kids (and adults too!) by storm. Check out "Bear Grylls Complete Collection".  These activity books are full of fun facts, quizzes, word searches, mazes, lots of tips from Bear Grylls,a nd more than 60 stickers!

Another great way to save is by purchasing combined volumes.  This means you are getting multiples stories in one book which is a great way to save! A kids favorite I highly recommend is "Complete Book of Farmyard Tales" which comes with a CD to read along with.  Another great combined volume set is Raccoon on the Moon and other Tales
