Bug Books for Kids

Summer is finally making it's appearance! Along with the bright warm sunshine, chirping birds, blossoming flowers and budding trees come the BUGS!  Bugs are a whole other world for kids to explore! They can explore everything from houseflies, bees, fireflies, butterflies, moths, and everything in between!

Here are some great BUG books to help your young readers learn as they explore the buzzing bees, fluttering butterflies, and even the creepy crawly bugs!

1001 Bugs to Spot is crawling with bugs to find, count and talk about, this fascinating picture book provides hours of puzzle-solving fun. Spot beetles scurrying across desert dunes, butterflies flitting through the jungle, caterpillars munching on leaves, and many, many more bugs!

Big Book of Big Bugs  is full of bugs such as an amazing stick insect that is longer than your arm to gigantic spiders that are as big as a dinner plate (I think I shall pass on ever seeing that one in person!). This book's huge fold-out pages let readers discover how big some of the biggest bugs in the world really are.

Bugs will allow young readers to discover thousands and THOUSANDS of bugs that live all around the world.

Usborne Young Beginners "Bugs" is part of an exciting reading series for young children with lots of pictures and very simple text about the fascinating world of bugs. Your child can progress through the Young Beginners series to the Beginners series, followed by the Discovery Adventure series for older readers.

In Busy Bug Book, watch as the toy bug whizzes around the tracks in this delightful interactive book. Wind up the bug by pulling it backward, place it on it's four tracks and watch it wiggle around the garden.

In First Sticker Book Bugs discover butterflies, dragonflies, caterpillars, spiders – the world is full of amazing bugs. Find out which bugs live in jungles, deserts, swamps, and gardens by adding 170 stickers to the pictures in this book.

In Bug Hotel, children can lift the flaps to discover fun facts about their favorite creepy crawly bugs! Then they can then discover how to create their own sustainable environments for garden insects.

Bug in a Rug is a lively story with irresistible illustrations, this book is a delight to share with very young children. It can also be enjoyed by children who are beginning to read for themselves. The simple rhyming text helps to develop essential language and early reading skills, and there are guidance notes for parents at the back of the book.

Butterflies & Bugs decorate the scenes with beautiful rub-downs in this beautifully detailed keepsake book! The card pocket on the inside front cover holds eight sheets of rub-down transfers. There are jungle, pond, meadow, honeybee garden, butterfly house and many more scenes to decorate — half of the spread is colored, and the other half is labeled line drawings ready to be colored. The beautifully detailed rub-downs can be added anywhere you like!

This book takes you across jungles, over deserts, through gardens, and under the ocean to see exactly 1,000 amazing things found in nature. The book takes children through many different habitats (the savannah, desert, jungle, under the sea, mountains, etc.) to see beautiful illustrations of the plants, natural features, and animals of these biomes. It also features pages like ‘Creepy-crawlies’, ‘Food in nature’, ‘Rocks, fossils & gems', and ‘Feathers, eggs & nests’.

Summer Reading Challenge

Can you believe that school will soon be out? Where does time go?

Have you heard of the term “summer slide”? No? Let me explain. Summer Slide is a term used to describe when kids are out of school for the summer break and lose some of their academic gains they made over the school year.  This can be caused by multiple factors, however, it tends to be in areas children struggled the most - particularly math and reading.

How can you help prevent the summer slide?

1. Visit the library.
2. Have your child read at least 20 minutes daily.
3. Read to your child.
4. Read with your child, exploring different types of reading, like  poetry.
5. Read for different purposes.

6. Play word games.

Here is a fun Summer Reading Challenge that will help encourage reading.  As a child, I loved to take my books and toys OUTSIDE.  The big Cherry tree in our back yard or the crabapple tree in the front was two of my favorite hangout places, until we discovered the tree in the back field which had branches that draped around it's trunk, creating a "fort" for my sisters, neighborhood kids, and myself.

Reading's Five Finger Rule

Do you struggle with finding the correct reading level when searching for the books you buy or check out of your local library for your children?  There is an easy way to determine if a book is too easy or too hard.

Use the Five Finger Rule.

Open up a book to any page.  It doesn't matter, first page, last page, or any one in between.  Have your child read the page.  For every word your child struggles with, hold a finger up.
  • One finger up or just one word they didn't understand or know?  The book is "OK" but too easy.

  • Two fingers up or just two words they didn't understand or know? The book is still a good choice for your child but still a little too easy.  These books are best for when they are lacking confidence in their reading and reassurance is needed.

  • Three fingers up or just three words they didn't understand or know?  This book is just right for your child, though, they may still need your assistance.

  • Four fingers up or just four words they didn't understand?  This book is a little too hard for independent reading. With your assistance, it's still a good choice to help challenge them... especially for the child who is eager to learn.

  • Five fingers up or five words they didn't understand or know? This book is just too hard. This book may be better suited for an older child or the parent to read to the younger reader.

Next time you are choosing new books for your child to read, use the Five Finger Rule formula.  It will definitely make for better reading. No more breezing through a book because it's too easy and no fuss about not wanting to read because the book is to hard.
